Master craftsman: Ted’s Taphouse embraces craft beer movement

Nadia Imafidon, July 9, 2014

Ted's Taphouse owner Ted Nguyen gets a lot of flak for the lack of signage outside of his 4-month-old business at 1004 Massachusetts St. While some may worry about losing potential customers, Nguyen is putting his efforts elsewhere.

“I tell them we’re too busy selling chicken, beer and having fun,” he says.

Housed in the former Oh Boy! Chicken space,Ted’s Taphouse is Lawrence’s only craft beer hang out spot with gluten-free fried chicken on the menu. In the front space of the building is Pho (formerly known as Wild Pho), which is owned by the Nguyen family. His family has owned a restaurant in downtown Lawrence since 1982, he says.

Borrowed from the kids' menu: Restaurants offer adult versions of childhood treats

Most stout beers have a chocolate or coffee note, developed in the roasting of the malt, that make them a perfect companion to ice cream, says Ted’s Taphouse owner Ted Nguyen.

His bar serves up a combination of the two in its adult version of the root beer float.

“You get the creamy fattiness, but you don’t lose that flavor of the beer itself,” Nguyen says. “The cream kind of mellows out the stout taste.”

He calls the result — made with Sylas and Maddy’s ice cream and your choice of whatever’s on-tap at the moment — “the goodness of both worlds in a glass.”

Beer floats run from $6 to $10, depending on the stout.

Ted's Taphouse Expands

Chad Lawhorn December 23, 2014

While we’re on the beer front, I might as well pass along information about the expansion of a unique beer retailer in downtown. Back in July my colleague Nadia Imafidon told you about Ted’s Taphouse, a new craft beer retailer at 1004 Massachusetts St. But as the article noted, the business occupied only the back half of that building, and was a bit difficult to find. Well, the business now has expanded.

The Vietnamese restaurant Wild Pho has closed, and Ted’s Taphouse has expanded into the Massachusetts Street frontage that it previously occupied. The expansion will allow for more seating and also will allow for a more traditional dining area to accommodate families and others who don’t want to sit in the bar area, said owner Ted Nguyen.
